Quiet and laid back in normal times, Visakhapatnam has suddenly become the epicentre of intense political activity over the last few days over YS Jagan Mohan Reddy’s proposal for three capitals for Andhra Pradesh, instead of only one.

Even as Jana Sena supremo Pawan Kalyan, in a show of strength, took out a huge rally from the airport, leading a sea of supporters on Saturday, 15 October, he called off Jana Vani, a programme scheduled on Sunday, after a few men from his party were arrested by the police.

Jana Vani is the flagship programme of the Jana Sena, where Pawan Kalyan receives petitions from the general public on their grievances.

The police also served a notice to Pawan Kalyan, saying he should not hold any meeting or organise any procession in Visakhapatnam as prohibitory orders under Section 30 of the Police Act were in force.

As he was prevented from holding Jana Vani, Pawan Kalyan confined himself to a star hotel on the beach road while his fans were seen milling outside to have a glimpse of their matinee idol.

The police took at least 14 key members of Pawan Kalyan’s Jana Sena team into custody after a few party workers created a ruckus at the Visakhapatnam airport on Saturday evening.

Jana Sena workers who had gathered in large numbers at the airport to welcome Pawan Kalyan went wild — pelting stones, damaging vehicles, and attacking the staff of AP Cabinet ministers — in protest against the ongoing government-sponsored Visakha Garjana.

The ministers were returning home after attending the Visakha Garjana rally that was held in the morning when the trouble began.

A staff member of one of the ministers sustained injuries in the stone-pelting by the Jana Sena workers.

Pawan Kalyan lambasts YSRCP government

In a sharp reaction to the police action, Pawan Kalyan came down heavily on the ruling YSRCP.

The main Opposition — the TDP — came out in support of Pawan Kalyan and condemned the arrest of Jana Sena workers and leaders.

The BJP — an ally of the Jana Sena — also slammed the police for arresting the youths.

“Jagan Mohan Reddy wants power vested in his hands. That is why he wants to have three capitals in the name of decentralisation. The ministers in the state Cabinet are dummies and they really don’t have any powers. Power is vested in only one person’s hand and he talks about decentralisation,” Kalyan told reporters in Visakhapatnam on Sunday.

“I condemn the high-handed behaviour of the police. They are trying to provoke me so that a Konaseema-kind incident would happen in a peace-loving place like Visakhapatnam. I don’t want such a law-and-order situation in Visakhapatnam. Since our leaders were arrested, we have decided to postpone the Jana Vani programme,” he added.

He also said that his programme in Visakhapatnam was fixed long ago — even before Visakha Garjana was announced.

Meanwhile, the YSRCP alleged that Pawan Kalyan planned his visit to Visakhapatnam only to divert attention from Visakha Garjana.

“Pawan Kalyan is a political terrorist. His visit to Visakhapatnam is only to divert the public attention from Visakha Garjana. He acts and works under the direction of TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu. That’s why he is here in Visakhapatnam,” said the state’s Industries Minister Guduvada Amarnath.
