Tension prevailed in Kuppam on Thursday, 25 August, with YSRCP activists remaining determined to disrupt former Chief Minister and TDP president N Chandrababu Naidu’s second day’s tour in his home constituency in the Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh.

Normal life came to a standstill in the town with YSRCP giving a call for bandh.

The streets wore a deserted look as shops and other business establishments downed their shutters.

The APSRTC buses did not ply as the authorities, fearing arson, confined them to bus depots.

The police set up road blockades to prevent unruly elements from having a free run of the town.

The Ramakuppam clash

After a bloody clash on Wednesday in Ramakuppam in the constituency between the workers of the YSRCP and those of the TDP, the police made elaborate arrangements to prevent a repeat of the ugly incidents.

Bent on provoking the TDP workers, the YSRCP activists set up their party flags next to the TDP’s which triggered an angry exchange of words.

It soon deteriorated into a full-blown clash with both sides throwing stones at each other and later resorting to a showdown with sticks.

Police deployed

The police managed to disperse the crowd with an effort.

But on Thursday, the YSRCP, determined to disrupt his programme, gave a call for bandh in Kuppam but TDP leaders said that Naidu’s programmes would continue come what may on Thursday.

Taking the cue, TDP activists arrived in Kuppam in huge numbers while the YSRCP workers are preparing to take out a protest rally.

The police are deployed in full strength to foil any trouble.

Naidu reaches Kuppam amidst protests

Amidst protests by YSRCP, Naidu reached the Anna Canteen destroyed by the YSRCP activists.

He sat on a dharna near the canteen.

Meanwhile, the police launched a lathi-charge on TDP supporters agitating and raising slogans against the ruling YSRCP, at the spot.

Reportedly, the TDP activists injured in the lathi-charge have been admitted to a private hospital nearby.
