Malayalam actor-filmmaker Pratap Pothen dies at 69

The 69-year-old actor and director was found dead at his flat in Chennai on Friday. Pratap Pothen is said to have died of natural causes.

Filmmaker Pratap Pothen found dead at his home in Chennai.

Noted South Indian film actor and director Pratap Pothen was found dead at his flat in Chennai on Friday, 15 July.

The 69-year-old actor’s death was confirmed by the Kilpauk police station. As per the initial reports, he died of natural causes.

His last rites will be performed at a crematorium on New Avadi Road in Chennai at 10 am on Saturday.

Many prominent faces from the film industry are expected to visit the late actor’s residence to pay their last respects.

Cryptic Facebook post

The filmmaker on Thursday took to Facebook and posted a quote by US comedian George Carlin: “Death is caused by swallowing small amounts of saliva over a long period of time.”

The post gained a lot of attention since the news of his demise became public.

Fans apart, several prominent personalities from the industry mourned the loss of the actor-turned-filmmaker.

Many took to Twitter to express their condolences.

Memorable Roles

Born in Thiruvananthapuram, Pothen acted in more than 100 films in Tamil, Malayalam, and Telugu, besides directing a few superhit films.

He completed his education at Lawrence School, Lovedale, in Ooty, and Madras Christian College.

He is remembered for his roles in movies like Ayalum Njanum Thammil, 22 Female Kottayam, Idukki Gold, Ezra, Uyare, and Bangalore Days.

His noted works in Tamil include Moodupani, Varumayin Niram Sivappu, Nenjathai Killathe, and Panneer Pushpangal.

Pothen’s last movie Barroz, starring Mohanlal, is yet to be released.

Accolades for Pratap Pothen

He won the Filmfare Award for Best Actor for Thakara in 1979, and for Best Actor for Chamaram in 1980.

He was also bestowed with the Indira Gandhi Award for Best Debut Film of a Director, for his 1985 venture Meendum Oru Kaathal Kathai.

His other accolades include Filmfare Award for Best Director in 1987 for Rithubhedam, SIIMA Award for Best Actor in a Negative Role in 2012 for 22 Female Kottayam, and Kerala State Film Award – Special Jury Award in 2014.
