Potholes on Vatal Nagaraj Road near Lulu Mall

A 50-year-old Bengaluru homemaker who sustained grievous injures after the scooter she was riding pillion on with her daughter was knocked down by a KSRTC bus on Monday, succumbed to her injuries at a hospital on Tuesday, 18 October.

Uma Devi fell off the scooter when her daughter Vanitha S (28) lost balance after the bus hit their scooter on Monday morning.

Eyewitnesses told the police that Vanitha was negotiating a pot-holed riddled patch on Vatal Nagaraj Road near the Lulu Mall when the KSRTC bus hit their scooter from behind. The bus was heading to Shivamogga from Bengaluru, the police said.

Uma Devi was hit by the bus and was immediately shifted to the nearby ESI hospital in Rajajinagar where she was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). There was also a surgery scheduled for which laboratory tests were being conducted.

However, she stopped responding to treatment during the night as she had lost a considerable amount of blood and succumbed to her injuries, the police said.

The Malleswaram police had earlier registered a case under IPC Section 279 — rash and negligent driving on a public highway — and Section 337 — causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety — against KSRTC bus driver Maruthi.

After Uma Devi’s death, IPC Section 304-A — causing accidental death due to rash and negligent driving — was added to the charge and Maruthi was was arrested on Tuesday.

Uma Devi was a resident of Gayatrinagar and is survived by three daughters. Vanitha was dropping her to her house in Gayatrinagar on Monday when the accident occurred. Uma Devi had gone to Vanitha’s house on Sunday, the police said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) West Division, Kuldeep Kumar Jain told South First: “It is unfortunate that the victim succumbed to her injuries. We have registered a case against the KSRTC bus driver and arrested him. We are also investigating whether the pothole-riddled patch of road has anything to do with the accident. Our men are working on obtaining CCTV footage which can reveal those details.”

Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Ravikanthe Gowda said: ”Investigation will involve all aspects of the accident.”

As news of Uma Devi’s death — possibly due the potholes on the road — spread, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai sought a detailed report from the state police on the incident.

Bommai noted that there were allegations that the death happened due to potholes.

“I have sought a report from the police officers. Action will be initiated after we get the preliminary report on the incident,” he said.
