The life term awarded by a sessions court to beedi tycoon Muhammed Nisham for murdering the security guard of his apartment complex for a delay in opening the gates was upheld by the Kerala High Court on Friday, 16 September.
The infamous incident, which invited the attention of the whole nation, took place at a luxury apartment complex in central Kerala’s Thrissur when Chandrabose, the guard on duty, failed to open the gates instantly.
Nisham knocked down Chandrabose and rammed his hummer into him for the delay.
Nisham approached the high court with an appeal seeking relaxation of the sentence.
Responding to the high court decision, Chandrabose’s wife Jamanthi expressed happiness but said she always preferred a death sentence for Nisham.
Multi-millionaire businessman Nisham is currently undergoing rigorous life imprisonment at Kannur Central Jail.
He was the managing director of Tamil Nadu-based King Beedi Company.
In recent months, Nisham created headlines because of his special treatment in prison.
In an earlier bid to save himself from the harsh jail term, Nisham claimed he had severe mental diseases.

Following a court order, an expert medical committee was constituted to check his mental health.
The committee gave a detailed report to the court saying that Nisham’s mental condition was stable.
In January 2016, the Thrissur District Additional Sessions Court sentenced Nisham, then 38 years old, to life in prison and an additional 24 years behind bars.
The court had also slapped a fine of ₹80.3 lakh on him. From the fine, an amount of ₹50 lakh would be paid to Chandrabose’s family as compensation.
Nisham’s wife Amal is now facing trial as a witness who turned hostile during the trial.
Nisham is facing charges under the Indian Penal Code Sections 302 (murder), 326 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means), 506 (1) (criminal intimidation), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 324 (voluntarily causing hurt with dangerous weapons or means), 427 (mischief causing property damage), and 449 (criminal trespass).
Chandrababu was 47 years old when the incident occurred on 29 January, 2015, at the Sobha City Apartments Complex in Puzhakkal near Thrissur.
After three weeks of treatment and a series of surgeries at Amala Medical College Hospital in Thrissur, Chandrabose succumbed to his injuries on 16 February.
According to the hospital records, there were 22 injuries on his body, and nine of his ribs were broken.
