The Telangana health minister has directed doctors of the state to prescribe only generic medicines and not branded ones.
The number of free medicines in government hospitals across Telangana has increased to 843 from 720.
The new list of free medicines was announced by Health Minister T Harish Rao after the review meeting on hospitals under the Directorate of Medical Education on Monday, 11 July.
Medical officers of all districts, superintendents, heads of departments, and doctors of all state-run hospitals attended the meeting via video conferencing.
With the new list, 123 new life-saving free medicines will be available in government hospitals of the state.
“The doctors will be given a booklet with a list of all the medicines the government is providing for free and their details,” said Rao.
The health minister further stated that doctors can only prescribe medicines provided in the list.
“Government doctors are directed to prescribe only generic medicines and not branded ones,” he said.
The list of medicines to be available in Telangana government hospitals includes 311 drugs on the Essential Medicines List (EML) and 532 drugs on the Additional Medicines List (AML).
The health minister also asked district officials to identify the places where 108 ambulance services cannot be provided due to flooding caused by recent downpours.
The district and health officials have been directed to make alternative arrangements in places where ambulance services are not available.
“Due to heavy rain, there is a possibility of road connectivity disruption in some tribal areas due to overflowing rivulets. In such conditions, special attention should be given to the health of pregnant women and patients,” said Rao.
The health minister also directed health officials to raise awareness about malaria, dengue, diarrhoea, and other diseases.
“Health officials from the sub-centre level to district hospitals should be available for people. Medical services should be provided to people in coordination with the Panchayat Raj, Municipal and other departments,” he said
