KTR

Taking serious exception to what he considered an attempt to impose Hindi on the South, Telangana IT and Industries Minister KT Rama Rao on Wednesday, 12 October, shot off a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi warning him of possible repercussions in the form of widening socio-economic schisms in the country.

Referring to the committee of Parliament on Official Languages, headed by Union Minister for Home Amit Shah, recommending that Hindi be made the medium of instruction in technical and non-technical educational institutions, Rama Rao said the move was outright unconstitutional and therefore the committee should withdraw the recommendation.

‘Unconstitutional’

In his letter to the prime minister, KTR cautioned him of the possible disastrous impact the unconstitutional recommendation would have on the present and future generations and the line of division it could draw between various parts of India.

Drawing the Prime Minister’s attention to how indirect imposition of Hindi was currently ruining the lives of crores of youngsters, the minister said that students who pursue education in regional languages are losing out on central government job opportunities as questions in qualifying tests for these jobs were only in Hindi and English.

He said there were around 20 central recruitment agencies which conduct the examinations only in Hindi and English. The UPSC conducts 16 recruitment examinations for national posts in the two languages.

Young lives ruined

The minister said that job announcements from central recruiting agencies are scarce and the limited recruitment drives are discriminatory against the students who pursued education in regional languages. He termed this as injustice being meted out to crores of youngsters eagerly aspiring for jobs in the central government.

KTR requested the prime minister to conduct the exams in regional languages for the benefit of the job aspirants.

Besides, in this highly competitive globalised world, the recommendation of the Committee of Parliament on Official Language headed by Union Minister Shah could take the nation backward in terms of development, he said.
