With Telangana legislative Assembly Speaker accepting the resignation of Munugode MLA Komatireddy Rajagopal Reddy on Monday, 8 August, evening and the secretary notifying the vacancy, the ruling TRS is warming up to facing the electoral challenge.

For the TRS, winning the seat, which is held by Congress, is crucial as the by-election comes on the back of its defeat in the hands of the BJP in Huzurabad and Dubbaka.

Winning the election is easier said than done for the TRS as it had to not only reckon with Rajagopal Reddy, who was the MLA from the constituency till yesterday, but also has to put in extra effort as he would be representing the BJP which has been breathing down the neck of Chief Minister KCR and other leaders day and night, with lofty professions of unseating him in the next elections.

As any reversal in the election might trigger a domino effect in the general election next year, the Pink Party is marshaling all its strength to wrest the seat from Rajagopal and send out a message loud and clear that KCR calls the shots even in the face of the renewed push by the BJP.

TRS keeps its ear to the ground

Ever since Rajagopal met Union Home Minister and the BJP’s “master strategist” Amit Shah in a prelude to resigning as MLA and joining the saffron party recently, the TRS has been watching the unfolding scenario keenly and has kept its ear to the ground to know what is happening in both the BJP and Congress camps.

Its strategy, according to sources, is to know the weaknesses of the opponents and twist them to its advantage.

The party is hoping to face the BJP and Congress by drawing up a strategy based on the findings of the various surveys done by election strategist Prashant Kishor’s team and others which reportedly stressed the need for a focus on ground-level activists and winning them over to its side.

Accordingly, it has entrusted the responsibility of poaching constituency-level leaders to Minister of Energy G Jagadish Reddy who has been on the job for quite some time now.

Though the party has not yet indicated who would be its candidate yet as there is enough time to zero in on one, it does not want to appear lagging in campaigning at the ground level.

Ground-level outreach already on

Accordingly, it has begun establishing one-to-one contact with the workers and the people, caste, and community wise, and entices them into supporting the party using the unlimited resources it has.

KCR, who is keeping a close watch on the electoral prospects of the party in Munugode, has not yet indicated his preference for any one individual to fight the election, though there are quite a number of people showing interest in the party’s nomination.

Among them are Telangana Legislative Council chairman Gutha Sukhender Reddy or his son Amit Reddy, K Prabhakar Reddy, who lost to Rajagopal in the 2018 elections, former MLC Karne Prabhakar, former MP Bura Narasaiah Goud, and TRS leader Karnati Vidyasagar.
