‘Cognitive surrender’: MIT study warns AI is undermining student confidence, learning and assessment

Synopsis: A recent MIT study warns that growing reliance on artificial intelligence is disrupting traditional learning practices, making student assessment harder and undermining confidence and mastery. The report cautions that overdependence on AI can lead to “cognitive surrender” and isolation, while calling for an AI-aware overhaul of teaching and assessment practices.

A recent study by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) on the impact of Artificial intelligence (AI) on students has raised serious concerns about the current education system’s limitations in keeping pace with ever-growing technological advancements.

The study was conducted by an Ad Hoc Committee on AI Use in Teaching, Learning, and Research Training and involved five months of meetings, research, and outreach among students and staff at the university.

The study intended to understand the role of generative AI in the life and educational mission of the institute and recommend how to navigate its challenges and opportunities.

It produced alarming observations regarding AI’s impact on students’ intellect and how the current education system was not equipped to adapt to rapidly advancing technology.

AI undermines student confidence, makes assessment harder

The report made some key observations regarding the impact of AI on the academic life of students and staff.

It noted that students use AI frequently, though the approach varies from curiosity and seeking creative inspiration to anxiety. The professors also have differing positions on the use of AI- some encourage exploring its possibilities, while others are suspicious and sometimes resort to what the report calls “AI refusal.”

The report acknowledged the new learning experiences AI brings to the campus but cautioned about its adverse impacts on the students.

“While AI is allowing instructors to develop exciting new learning experiences and enabling students to learn and experiment in innovative ways, there have been a number of concerning effects on the life of the campus..” the report said.

It noted that the use of AI has upended the foundations of long-established approaches to learning at MIT. From take-home exams and UROPs to office hours and study groups, AI has been disrupting the MIT learning experience. It has also made it harder to assess progress made by students.

It challenged “decades of distinctive MIT community norms and values about rigor, the creative friction required for learning, collaborative problem solving, and personal integrity,” the report said.

AI has also messed with students’ intellect and sometimes their social life.

The report said dependence on AI caused increasing isolation in students while also leading to the erosion of what it described as a “social contract” between students and professors.

AI was prone to causing overdependence, which resulted in cognitive surrender of students, the report said.

“Getting the right answer from a chatbot can create the illusion of learning – but it can also trigger “cognitive surrender”, where students fall back on AI at the first hint of struggle,” the report said.

It also noted that increased use of AI is undermining the confidence and mastery of students.

“AI is changing what students need to know and know how to do,” it said.

The report also noted that the students are “confused and concerned about a lack of clarity, consistency and justification about the use of AI, within a given subject and across the curriculum.”

Broader, holistic approach

The report called for a broader approach towards solving the challenges posed by AI in educational spaces. It stressed the need for adapting educational processes to cater to an AI-aware world.

“While these challenges are pressing, AI also offers exciting opportunities for learning and for creating. Many instructors told us that AI tools help them develop customised, interactive learning tools that allow students to explore subject content with more depth and for instructors to create learning experiences for their students that are new or newly tailored to each student,” it noted, adding that the potential of these technologies to augment work across campus is “immense.”

The report recommended a campus-wide review of what students need to learn in the age of AI, led by instructors and departments, to redesign classroom activities, assignments and assessments. It called for dedicated resources, such as additional teaching assistants, and adapting physical spaces to support experimentation, community-building and AI-free interaction and assessment. In addition, it recommended creating communities of practice where educators can share challenges, findings, tools and techniques to improve teaching and learning.
