Edappadi Palaniswami (EPS) faction appointed RB Udhayakumar as the deputy leader of the opposition on Tuesday, 19 July. He was the former revenue minister in the EPS cabinet.

The deputy leader of the opposition post was last held by O Panneerselvam (OPS).

The decision was taken during an AIADMK party member meeting in a private hotel in Chennai on Sunday, 17 July. Senior members of AIADMK including EPS participated in the meeting.

Appointment

EPS in a statement confirmed Udhayakumar’s appointment as deputy leader of the opposition.

On 13 July, EPS had appointed deputy general secretaries and secretary headquarters of the party.

The appointment comes after OPS sent a letter to Tamil Nadu speaker Appavu on 12 July, requesting him to reject the appointment of new office bearers, citing pending cases in the court and the records of the Election commission.

OPS in the letter to the speaker wrote that he was the Coordinator of AIADMK and he had the power to appoint office bearers as per the party bylaws.

However, on 11 July, EPS expelled OPS from the party’s primary membership.

SS Krishnamurthy, former MLA from Kalasapakkam constituency, was elected as deputy secretary of AIADMK by the EPS faction.
