Two people — both teachers — have been arrested in Tamil Nadu after a 17-year-old girl studying in a private school in Chinnasalem in the Kallakurichi district died by suicide in the early hours of Wednesday, 13 July.

In a note left behind, she accused the two teachers of torturing her, the Tamil Nadu police said.

Kallakurichi Superintendent of Police (SP) Selvakumar told South First that the victim — a student of the Sakthi Matric Higher Secondary School in Kaniyamoor — jumped from the school hostel building on Wednesday.

Kin blame school, teachers

Selvakumar said, “According to the girl’s suicide note, the two teachers regularly scolded her for scoring low marks in their subjects.”

The police were reportedly informed about the incident around 5 am on Wednesday after the school officials spotted the victim lying in a pool of blood.

“The local police, along with school management, rushed the girl to a local hospital for treatment, where she was declared dead on arrival,” said Selvakumar.

Soon after learning about the girl’s death, her mother rushed to the school along with her relatives.

They raised slogans against the school and its management. They also demanded stringent action against the school management and teachers.

Police action

“The victim’s mother and relatives dispersed only after we assured them that appropriate action would be taken against the culprits,” said Selvakumar.

“We have arrested both the teachers mentioned in the girl’s suicide note,” the SP added.

The Chinnasalem police identified the arrested teachers as Vasanth and Haripriya.

The Tamil Nadu Police have booked the two under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) Section 306 (Abetment to suicide) and Section 174 (unnatural death) of the CrPC.

The police have also sent the teen’s body for an autopsy at the government district hospital.

The cops have also formed a special investigation team, including three deputy superintendents of police (DSPs), to investigate the case.

The police in their preliminary investigation have learnt that the girl was studying in the school from Class 6 and was staying in the school hostel.

The deceased was a resident of the Periyanesalur village in the Cuddalore district of the state.

Pressure on students

The pressure of education and examination on students in Tamil Nadu seem to be taking a heavy toll on them.

For example, at least 28 students attempted suicide, and 11 of them even succeeded, after the declaration of board exam results last month.

Educationist Gajendra Babu said back then: “It is the collective failure of the government. It shows the inability of the government to prevent the suicides of students. Students should have been approached academically and not administratively by the government.”
