At a time when the election to choose the next Congress president is gathering steam, the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) on Monday, 19 September, passed a unanimous resolution supporting Rahul Gandhi as the next party chief.

The resolution was adopted at the general body meeting of the state unit held in Chennai. A total of 652 members of the body participated in the meeting.

With this resolution, the TNCC joined the list of other Pradesh Congress Committees — such as Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Jammu and Kashmir, Maharashtra and Bihar — that have also resolved to back the Gandhi scion for the top post.

Over the next few days, more PCCs are expected to jump onto this bandwagon.

Interestingly, these resolutions also come at a time when there is speculation that Rahul is reluctant to return as Congress president, and leaders like Shashi Tharoor could throw their hats in the ring.

The push by state units backing Rahul Gandhi as Congress president comes at a time the Gandhi scion has been evading questions over his candidature for the post and is leading the Bharat Jodo Yatra.

What does the TNCC resolution say?

According to the TNCC, an unprecedented situation prevails in Indian politics today, which Independent India has never witnessed.

“India is mired in communal politics, and as a result, people are divided, communal harmony has been disrupted and development hindered,” said the TNCC resolution.

“In order to save the people of India from this situation, and for the democratic and secular forces to win in the 2024 general elections, this meeting seeks the unanimous election of Rahul Gandhi as the next president of the All-India Congress Committee,” it added.

“This committee strongly believes that India will have a bright future only if Rahul Gandhi takes up this responsibility,” it went on to say.

The general body also lauded the efforts of Rahul in undertaking the 3,500-km-long Bharat Jodo Yatra — a padayatra aimed at reuniting the country and undoing the damage done by BJP rule at the Centre — from Kanniyakumari to Kashmir for the “future of the people of India”.

It also resolved to vest powers with the Congress president to appoint the next chief of the state unit and AICC members representing Tamil Nadu.
