The BJP has lodged a complaint with the Election Commission of India (ECI) that the ruling TRS has tapped the phones of its leaders campaigning for the by-election for the Munugode Assembly seat in Telangana.

It added that the action was outright illegal and an intrusion of the privacy of these individuals, and that the TRS was also committing several other election malpractices as a result.

BJP general secretary and Telangana in-charge Tarun Chugh, in his representation to the poll body in Delhi on Monday, 31 October, also said that the TRS leaders were transferring money to people in Munugode through payment apps like Google Pay and PhonePe to influence voters.

He added that the TRS had used a similar modus operandi to send money to the voters in previous elections — including the recent MLC elections.

Referring to the TRS’ complaint that the BJP nominee in Munugode had transferred money to some bank accounts, he said that it was fiction.

He said it was surprising that a ruling party should make such a complaint without any documentary proof, and therefore it was nothing but an attempt to mislead the voters in the Munugode constituency.

Chugh said that the banking details of any individual or company and any transaction are protected under the law.

Even the Right to Information (RTI) Act does not permit a person to get someone else’s banking details, he said.

Furthermore, TRS leaders were openly stating that they were probing the banking transactions of some individuals and companies, which itself showed the commission of illegal acts by TRS and its leaders, he claimed.

The BJP general secretary also brought to the notice of the ECI that employee associations like TNGO and RTC were campaigning for the TRS and were openly pressuring government employees and others to support the party.

He named the leaders as TNGO state president Manila Rajender, RTC secretary Shravan Kumar, and its employees’ union secretary Thomas.

Meanwhile, the three accused in the “Cash for MLAs” case — Ramachandra Bharati alias Satish Sharma, Nanda Kumar, and Simha Yajulu — moved the Supreme Court challenging the orders of the Telangana High Court, which remanded them in judicial custody after a special ACB court set them free.

The apex court asked the registry to list the petition along with others that were to come up on Friday.
