Hyderabad court

A City Civil Court in Hyderabad on Wednesday, 24 August, issued interim orders restraining BJP MP Parvesh Varma and former MLA Manjinder Singh Sirsa from Delhi from making any further comments — in either public meetings or on the television or social media — against TRS MLC K Kavitha in the Delhi liquor scam case.

The court, while issuing notices to the two BJP leaders, adjourned the next hearing on the petition to 13 September.

The court issued the orders while hearing a defamation petition filed by Kavitha — daughter of Telangana Chief Minister and TRS chief K Chandrashekar Rao — against the two BJP leaders for making allegations that she was involved in the liquor scam came to the surface in Delhi recently.

Meanwhile, the BJP leaders say that they would not back down.

Reacting to the court’s direction, Sirsa told South First over the phone, “We will give an answer in the court and prove what we said was true.”

Telangana BJP spokesperson NV Subhash told South First, “As a responsible party, we will abide by the court’s decision and follow it. But we will also bring our angle of the allegations to the court in the next hearing.”

Kavitha refuted allegations

Kavitha on Monday strongly refuted the “baseless” allegations levelled against her by the BJP that she had a role in the liquor scam in which Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia is embroiled.

“I have nothing to do with the Delhi liquor scam. The BJP leaders are trying to malign the name of our family,” she said, adding that the BJP was free to order any investigation it fancied with any agency.

“We will cooperate with the authorities in their investigation. I have nothing to fear as I am clean,” she told reporters.

The BJP’s allegations

BJP leaders Sirsa and Varma had on Sunday alleged that Kavitha had a role in the scam.

At a press conference in Delhi, they linked Kavitha with liquor businessman Arun Ramachandran Pillai, who was raided by the CBI in Hyderabad a few days ago.

According to them, Kavitha and her associates used multiple connections to influence the tweaking of the liquor policy for financial gains, as a part of which AAP No 2 Manish Sisodia was allegedly paid off.

Pillai, based out of Bengaluru but a Canadian citizen, is a director with Robin Distilleries and Robin Distribution Pvt Ltd, both set up in Hyderabad, but only in April this year.
