Authorities at the Nehru Zoological Park in Hyderabad on Tuesday, 20 September, clarified that 18 out of the 20 lions in the zoo are healthy, while two are under treatment.

This was clarified in a statement by the zoo authorities after a visitor took to Twitter recently to point out the “poor health of lions” at the Nehru Zoological Park.

“Hey @KTRTRS @byadavbjp I found the lions at nehru park to be extremely sick – most of my friends who have been to the zoo shared same thoughts. Tho I don’t have evidence to prove my views, a proper medical checkup for those animals would be Amazing, please help :)), [sic]” wrote Aarihant Aaryan, a twitter user on September 17.

Replying to him, Telangana’s Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister KT Rama Rao said he would ask the zoo veterinarians to examine the lions.

“We will have the Nehru Zoological Park Veterinarians examine the Lions. Thanks for bringing this to my attention Aarihant, p[sic]” said KTR on Twitter.

Meanwhile, the zoo authorities strongly condemned the statement by the Twitter user and said that the statement was misleading.

“We are taking care of animals through experienced veterinary surgeons by regular vaccination and deworming as per schedule,” the zoo authorities said in a statement.

“Of the 20 lions — eight African and 12 Asiatic — in the Zoo, two ill lions are Asian lionesses and have been undergoing treatment for the last two years, and both are showing signs of improvement,” they added.
