Reacting sharply to the Central Cabinet’s approval for a one-time ₹22,000-crore grant for three oil marketing companies (OMCs), Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) working president and Telangana’s Industries and Commerce Minister KT Rama Rao on Friday asked why the special package was not offered to women who were suffering on account of the withdrawal of subsidies on LPG cylinders and the rising prices of cooking gas.
In a statement in Hyderabad, the minister demanded that the Central government offer a similar package or subsidy to gas users who are bearing a heavy financial burden.
He said that the price of a gas cylinder was ₹400 before Narendra Modi became prime minister. The current price of a cylinder is ₹1,100.
KTR said that Modi has positioned himself as a “Vishwa Guru” in terms of cylinder prices, as they are the highest in the world.
Pointing out that Modi had slammed Manmohan Singh — the then prime minister — when the price of a gas cylinder was ₹400, KTR asked what answers he had now for the people of the nation.

The minister said that the Central government had offered a subsidy of ₹827 on each cylinder in 2014, which was brought down to nothing by the Modi government.
The TRS leader said that the BJP government was insensitive to the middle class, whose savings plummeted in the past two years because of Covid-19 and the lockdown.
He asked why problems faced by women were not being addressed when oil companies’ issues were being resolved.
He called on women — who constitute half of the nation’s population — to take a firm decision not to bear anymore the atrocities inflicted by BJP.
He said that the downfall of the BJP should start from the kitchens of poor and middle-class women.
