Kanthamaneni Umamaheswari, the fourth and youngest daughter of former chief minister of undivided Andhra Pradesh and thespian late NT Rama Rao, allegedly died by suicide on Monday, 1 August.
According to police, Umamaheswari, the youngest of NTR’s 12 children, ended her life by hanging from the ceiling of the bedroom in her residence in Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad.
Her daughter Deekshita called the police when she did not open her bedroom doors even despite repeated knocking.
The police came in at about 3 pm and broke into the room to find her body hanging from a ceiling fan.
The 52-year-old had reportedly slipped into depression following some health problems remaining chronic, not responding to medical treatment.
She initially married businessman Narendra Rajan, but later they got divorced. She subsequently married again. Deekshita has a sister.
Her body has been sent to Osmania General Hospital where an autopsy has been conducted. “We are waiting for the report,” S. Rajasekhar Reddy, SHO, Jubilee Hills police station, told South First.
A case has been registered under Section 174 of the CrPC and further investigation is on, he added.
Her funeral is expected to take place on Wednesday.
According to sources, NTR’s family members, some of whom are abroad, have been informed and are reaching Hyderabad.
Former chief minister of Andhra Pradesh and Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief N Chandrababu Naidu, who is NTR’s son-in-law, rushed to Umamaheswari’s residence along with his family on learning about her death.
Meanwhile, people across the social spectrum took to social media to mourn her.

NTR, who was a very popular film actor, founded the TDP in 1982, and nine months later, he won Assembly elections, creating a record of sorts.
Rama Rao fought on the plank of Telugu self-respect which he said the Congress had mortgaged on Delhi’s streets.
He died in 1996 at the age of 72, shortly after Chandrababu Naidu captured power by pulling the rug from under his feet.
