Telangana Education Minister Sabitha Indira Reddy on Friday, 21 October, directed the District Education Officer (DEO) to immediately cancel the recognition of the BSD DAV School in the Banjara Hills area of Hyderabad, where a four-year-old was allegedly sexually assaulted by the driver of the school principal.

This comes after many parents demanded that the state government respond to the incident.

“It has been three days, and there is no reaction either from the government or the Education Minister,” a parent told South First before the announcement.

“What is stopping them to react on this crucial matter? It is her responsibility to take action and help parents regain trust,” the parent added.

It may be noted that both the driver and the principal have been arrested since the matter came to light and the police registered a case earlier this week.

‘Make arrangements for other students’

The education minister also asked the officials to make arrangements for other students enrolled in the current academic session in the school to be shifted to nearby schools so that they do not lose a year.

She added that the onus was on the DEO to clear all the doubts of the parents related to the admission of the students in the coming days.

An important step, the minister said, was obtaining a guarantee from the school owners to avoid such incidents.

Safety measures committee

Reddy also formed a committee, which will submit its report within a week, to advise the government on necessary steps to be taken so that such incidents are not repeated.

Headed by the education secretary, the committee comprises the director of the school education department, the secretary of the Women and Child Welfare Department (WCD), and Deputy Inspector General (DIG)-level officers who supervise the safety of women in the police department.

Once the recommendations of the committee are out, those steps will be implemented on the ground level to ensure the safety of children.

Accused on remand

A day after the complaint was lodged, the Hyderabad City Police on 19 October, charged the co-accused principal Sivaraju Madhavi (55) with failing to report the case to the cops.

On 18 October, the cops arrested the driver Rajani Kumar (34), who allegedly sexually assaulted the four-year-old student for around three months.

Both the accused were sent to 14-days of judicial remand, and are currently lodged in Chanchalguda jail.
