Eager to strike a pre-emptive blow on the BJP, the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) has decided to organise a major public meeting in Munugode on 20 August, which Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao will address, a day ahead of the BJP’s proposed show of strength on 21 August, for which Union Home Minister Amit Shah has been invited.

Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao on Thursday reportedly discussed with party leaders from the Nalgonda district the prospects of the TRS in the upcoming byelection for the Munugode Assembly seat.

Though Chandrasekhar Rao has not let the cat out of the bag yet on who the TRS candidate for byelection would be, he has asked the party leaders to spare no effort in wresting the seat from K Rajagopal Reddy, who will now be in the fray on a BJP ticket.

He reportedly told them that the prospects of the TRS were very bright, and therefore the leaders should work shoulder to shoulder to help the party nominee win the byelection.

‘Mobilise 1 lakh people’

The chief minister asked the leaders to mobilise at least 1 lakh people for the 20 August public meeting, named Praja Deevana, to set the tone for the byelection and to appear to be ahead of the saffron party in reaching out to the people.

KCR is understood to have said that the Munugode byelection was a desperate attempt by the BJP to prevent him from playing a key role in national politics.

The TRS is already activating the party machinery in the constituency. It has decided to appoint in-charges for each Mandal in the constituency.

The chief minister recently pacified disgruntled party elements in the constituency and asked them to support the official candidate, regardless of who it would be.

There is a camp in the constituency that is against former MLA Koosukuntla Prabhakar Reddy and does not want him to be the party candidate. The members of this camp once wrote to the chief minister to this effect, following which the KCR held talks with them.
